A man has been killed in far north Queensland after his car hit a cow.

The 38-year-old Cooktown man was driving on the Mulligan Highway about 20km north of Lakeland when the collision occurred around midnight, but it wasn’t until six hours later, on Sunday morning that a passing motorist came across the scene and notified police.

Queensland police say the man was pronounced dead at the scene and the cow also died.
